RecordItNow!!

Postby rolf » 05 Feb 2011, 20:46

At the Mandriva Forum, VictorR2007 posted about a KDE app that, apparently, is a frontend for recordmydesktop or, optionally, ffmpeg-recorder, with screenshot being a third option that is not so interesting: Victor's post.

It's a little hard to follow Victor's robo-translations but I think his participation is a sign of things to come from the new Mandriva-Russian collaboration. For some reason, I could use the links to install recorditnow-0.8-1.1bubmdv2010.1 and joschy-0.1-1bubmdv2010.1 from the x86_64 mirror directory but could not see all the rpms when I truncated the link; the page loading stopped at lib* packages.

Anyway, I've had an interest in this type of utility but very little background using such. For a small test, I tried two full-screen recordings. Differences I note:
  1. Using the RecordMyDesktop backend, the file is .ogv, relatively small, and there is an encoding pause after recording is stopped.
  2. Using ffmpeg-recorder as the backend, the .mp4 file is much larger but, it seems, all the encoding is done immediately, there is no pause after recording is stopped. This larger encoding is, also, smoother, the mouse-cursor activity is more completely recorded, clarity is similar.
  3. Also, ffmpeg-recorder did not seem to pick up the ambient sound of my space, out-of-the-box, anyway, while RecordMyDesktop did.
Interesting, on a couple of levels. :A

I did install both rpms referenced by Victor but don't think it comes from joschy, unless that program enables ffmpeg-recorder, somehow.

I do see likely suspects in recorditnow:

Code: Select all

[rolf@localhost ~]$ rpm -ql recorditnow
/etc/dbus-1/system.d/org.kde.recorditnow.helper.conf
/usr/bin/recorditnow
/usr/lib64/kde4/libexec/recorditnow_helper
/usr/lib64/kde4/recorditnow_ffmpeg.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/recorditnow_ffmpeg_config.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/recorditnow_ffmpegrecorder.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/recorditnow_ffmpegrecorder_config.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/recorditnow_mencoder.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/recorditnow_mencoder_config.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/recorditnow_recordmydesktop.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/recorditnow_recordmydesktop_config.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/recorditnow_screenshot.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/recorditnow_screenshot_config.so
...

I haven't tried istanbul.

OK I'll give it a go..
You should try istanbul. It creates ogg files and I uploaded it to youtube without conversion. It was much faster than the avi upload (converted from ogv -recordmydesktop).
But it looks like youtube is taking a lot of quality out of it when uploading.

Youtube will always do that. :p

Code: Select all

yaourt recorder
21 aur/recorditnow 0.8.1-2 (44)
A plugin based desktop recorder for KDE SC 4

I'm not going to install it though. I already have all the tools I need, and then some.

Yes I am only testing it in Mandriva here. In fact the quality gets better in Arch than Mandriva for some strange reason (recordmydesktop). Even though my Mandriva box is superior graphic wise.
Will start on recorditnow later.....

Graphics in general here are better in Arch than in Mandriva, for a lot of things. Last I ran Mandriva, I had this issue, through every single update post-2008.1.
