That's pretty funny. Last year, I got the upgrade itch and, considering some reports of a good price/performance and other perceived niceness, went over to the Inhel dark side for my first dual-core: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz and installed my first x86_64 os with Mandriva 2010.0
I've noticed my more recent case acquisitions have this provision for a fan and directional horn on the case side over the cpu location, where I put a manually speed-controlled case fan.

Not exactly a gaming PS you've got there rolf. So we can deduct from that that you are a serious computer guy :geek:
Do I see right; do you have a "pipe" from the fan down to the cpu? :)
While we are at it: Let me introduce myself. I don't have that big a fan but I have lot of them:)

Re: Nice!

Very very nice, both of you! I can see the advantages of each one, but they're different for each one. For instance, rolf's computer is probably more hardware-customizable, while Viking's would be geared more towards gaming.

And yes, I myself know for a fact that rolf is a serious computer guy. Go look at his posts at "that other forum". I've learned a lot from him CLI-wise, and in other areas as well.

Yes - actually I have 3 other boxes here but I picked the nicest one. And you are correct about the gaming specs. I want the fastest and the best - always (It should be fairly modern in 5 years). Turns out i can tune the older boxes to be (almost) as fast if I put my mind to it. Still I am running Mandriva cooker on that one (and ahem Win7 ultimate  ). Let me reserve some space here where you can imagine every excuse in the book:

There that should be enough space for that. :D Any way you guys have me thoroughly beat on the fan. :)

Don't do games :P
Yes, it's a sort of aiming tube for the case fan and gets remarkably close to the cpu heatsink. I just use the pc for browsing, email, business records, a lot of things a pc is good for, even passing the time or as a hobby. I, also, like to buy quality with not-too frequent upgrades. After a couple of years, I feel ok about investing in slightly newer technology but it is not vital that I do so. ;)

That's how I am, too, rolf. Kinda "meh" on the newer computers, but that's me. I do have plans though for next month, get a newer computer (specs I'm not sure of yet; probably custom built again), a new home stereo system, and turn this one into a music server. I can do my HTPC finally.

Any recommendations?

Oh, I have no idea. When I'm in the market, I do a lot of reading about what's currently popular and what the hardware fanatic consensus is. It's been quite a while since I was in research mode; computer tech goes obsolete quickly. There are a couple of sites I've been to, anandtech and Tom's Hardware:

Both great sites. Had forgotten about them. That's how long it's been since the last computer. Thanks so much!

I always do nvidia anyway.

With this thing just being a server at that time, I may take out my 7300 GT and use it for the new computer, who knows. This thing's done really well for me.
