Also wondering if my Arch xorg.conf would work for Fedora? Here it is:

Good idea. Why not? It is the same hardware. Why don't you just do a

Code: Select all

cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.dedanna
in fedora and copy the content into xorg.conf?
It should work.
Manjaro 64bit on the main box -Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz and nVidia Corporation GT200b [GeForce GTX 275] (rev a1. + Centos on the server - Arch on the laptop.

You will need to read this post here. The forum won't take the code, dammit.

Thanks.

Another X update. Now, when I reboot, instead of going to gdm, it goes to tty. When I put in startx, X starts (desktop loads and everything). The question is, why isn't gdm starting.

You have got it right in /etc/inittab (id:5:initdefault:)?

Code: Select all

$ cat /etc/inittab
# inittab is only used by upstart for the default runlevel.
#
# ADDING OTHER CONFIGURATION HERE WILL HAVE NO EFFECT ON YOUR SYSTEM.
#
# System initialization is started by /etc/init/rcS.conf
#
# Individual runlevels are started by /etc/init/rc.conf
#
# Ctrl-Alt-Delete is handled by /etc/init/control-alt-delete.conf
#
# Terminal gettys are handled by /etc/init/tty.conf and /etc/init/serial.conf,
# with configuration in /etc/sysconfig/init.
#
# For information on how to write upstart event handlers, or how
# upstart works, see init(5), init(8), and initctl(8).
#
# Default runlevel. The runlevels used are:
#   0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
#   1 - Single user mode
#   2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have networking)
#   3 - Full multiuser mode
#   4 - unused
#   5 - X11
#   6 - reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
#
#id:5:initdefault:

How 'bout you tell me? I have no clue what I'm doing with inittab. Do I need to uncomment it or ? Thanks.

Something else, too

I'm not seeing what I'm missing, or what he's saying is wrong. What he put there is exactly what I have.

Code: Select all

# ls /usr/lib/xorg/modules

extensions  libfb.so     libshadow.so    libwfb.so    multimedia
input       libint10.so  libvbe.so       libxaa.so

Edit: Ah, okay...

Code: Select all

# ls /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers

Nope. Now sticking at "Starting atd" on boot, and won't go any further.

I seriously wish Fedora would get their shite together on this stuff. This symptom is what made me have to reinstall last time. I'm tired of it. Am back in Arch for the meantime, where I have no mplayer (oh yay...) <sarcasm> AND, the kernel upgrade that started this crap in Fedora. AND an nvidia upgrade, the same one that made me go 'round and round last time in Arch:

Code: Select all

nvidia-256.44-1 [2.11 MiB]
     nvidia-utils-256.44-1

Ah, well, boss, if I'm not back for a while, you know why. It will mean I can't get into either box LOL and having to reinstall both... AGAIN.

Damn.

FINALLY got into Fedora! Found an old working xorg.conf backed up in there, copied it to xorg.conf, copied the nvidia_drv and nv_drv from /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers to /usr/lib/xorg/modules, rebooted, and here I am!

Worked it around the gdm bug and everything!

I'm going to put it here for future reference in case it gets lost at any point:

Code: Select all

$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

EndSection

      Depth     24
   EndSubSection
EndSection

Boys 'n girls, do not use system-config-display or nvidia-xconfig right now. They will both hose your xorg!

If anyone needs chkfontpath for Fedora, it's not in any of the repos. You can find it here. Noticed that when I installed msttcorefonts, that after, it would throw me an error on chkfontpath in yum every time now no matter what I do, so had to look this up, and get it installed.

Use yum to install it - that will also install the necessary dependencies.

I have read somewhere that nvidia does not support Xorg 1.8 so you have to use the noveau drivers. That fits your description here too I think.
