Re: Mandriva
The big naming discussion is going on at Mandriva. So how about coming up with something so we can tell them what it should be?
Mandriva Apfelstrudel, HAL. Mandriva Midgard!
Yes that's it Midgard it is
(Midgard is refered to as "midle earth" in Tolkiens Lord of the Rings)
I would have gone for Mandriva Mjølner which is the name of Thors Hammer but people seem to have trouble with the letter "ø"...sigh the earth would be a better place without all those foreigners.

Re: Mandriva
I hated losing "Mandrake" to "Mandriva" but I've gotten used to it. Now, I hate all the new suggestions. I would hope it stays Mandriva but, failing that, "Phoenix" has a wistful poetic aesthetic for me.
I think some slimeball lawyer or another has co-opted every poetic concept in history so I googled 'phoenix trademark'.
There is something at Trademarks - Phoenix Technologies Ltd. but I don't see 'Phoenix Linux'
Probably, there will be some complaint of 'confusion of trademark' or some such.

Re: Mandriva
Eh, how about they just call it "MDV" and get it over with.
I'd rather be a free person who fears terrorists, than be a "safe" person who fears the government.

Re: Mandriva
You are a genious! We could call it Mandriva !!!!
Best suggestion so far I am going for that - all the way
I wonder why no one has thought about it before
In any case that is the best suggestion so far. Mandriva is exactly what we should call it, because that is exactly what anybody will call it anyway.

I doubt that Mandriva SA would allow an "independent" foundation to use its registered name and trade marks. Those are among the few valuable assets that the company owns. Allowing a third party to use them could significantly lower the value of the company in the eyes of any future investor.
Most companies are extremely protective of their trademarks. In the past, at least, Mandriva SA has been no exception:

Re: Mandriva
Yeah that is probably true.
We could connect to the hat tradition of those other RPM distros - Like BlackHat.

Re: Mandriva
I'm not understanding something here. Are they (Mandriva), or are they not, giving the distro up to the community?
If so, then what is left of the company itself?
