Re: Mandriva
Well, we are watching Columbo over PMS, so I could try that tomorrow, maybe. The thing is MandrivaUpdate was not in a good state for my installation, which is not surprising for cooker. I'm not sure updating to cooker would make a relevant test of Tech Preview....cooker is always broken.
Re: Mandriva
Good point there, but I guess it is close right now. One of the important things to test is to add the repos automatically. (Well it is, for new Mandriva users!)
Also there is only one language in Libreoffice - Foreign English
Good luck with Columbo - He is a sharp dresser (Armani?)

Bernie Lomax with Gnome
OK I did the installation again and picked Gnome as DE this time. Here are some first impressions. The choice during install is between KDE Gnome and LXDE.
The Gnome that is actually installed is Gnome3! No problems - there even is a background
But!!!
All password propmts in GUI do not accept the correct password - not for the user and not for root! This is bad
On the positive side; that does not stop me one bit because it all works in the terminal.
Continuing the test....
Installation went well as the first time, and I even have a background :good:
And here we have the Gnome showstopper:
All password propmts in GUI do not accept the correct password - not for the user and not for root!
That kind of makes the "you have a update" message useless.
It works perfectly fine in the terminal - well except that the hal deamon is not running so urpmi will not install anything until its buddy HAL comes along..
That is a showstopper for the Gnome3 environment so the Gnome test stops here. I will add though that were installed the programs do work.
But to update the system or to download software I need to install HAL and I cannot install anything without HAL so
Re-installing and checking LXDE....

Re: Mandriva
LXDE installs fine, haldaemon is present and running but the menu does not show the programs.
In short this is a KDE distro!
I will now reinstall KDE.
Installing flashplugin - not a valid singature there, but it works. To get java up and running I installed
java-1.6.0-sun and that works just fine. (This is all after I have removed the CD repos and added cooker repos)
Mostly this thing works just fine....

Rolf can you confirm the freeze during update after removing the DVD repos and adding the cooker repos?
It might just be me running to much at one time here...

Re: Mandriva
Per's come by, probably following your link @ mdvforum. I've never understood the sound system well, relying on the kindness of dev's scripts and clicking on different choices in pavcontrol. In Tech Preview, the snd_hda_intel modules are loaded but there is no sound, the kmix applet shows 'no mixer found'. I tried alsamixer and various pa settings with no change. Finally, I installed and ran alsaconf, which detected and wrote to /etc/modules somewhere. After a reboot, I do have a mixer and sound, with pa set to Analog Stereo Duplex; usually it runs at analog surround 4.1 or 4.0....
Perhaps related, clicking on the sound preview in Systemsettings > sound notifications crashes systemsettings. Otherwise, MandrivaUpdate finishes, auto-orphans would remove kernel-desktop-devel and other useful looking stuff, so I won't do that, overall seems pretty usable.

Re: Mandriva
Even if I am not testing "properly" (If it does not work in VB it can forget a place on one of my boxes)- I can almost confirm every bit of this (system setting crash has not occurred), The orphan bit too - but I solved that by removing the CD repos and adding cooker repos I do not think there where bernie repos in the GUI suggestion...

Re: Mandriva
I am "improperly" installing ROSA 2012 right now - It will be interesting to compare the two....
The installation process is very smooth and no to may questions asked - this is good for newbies. You will be fine by just clicking next. The password for user and root must be provided the first time you start ROSA after it is provided you jump directly to login. It all works!
In Bernie Lomax there were the options of setting up the system and pick what kind of a system you would like to install. That is way more flexible. Given that Gnome has no haldaemon and that LXDE has no workink menu; that diference is not so big at the moment.
I prefere the choices and flexibility of Mandriva so accodring to me Bernie Lomax leads by 1 - 0 according to any newbie ROSA leads by 1 - 0.
Loging in and except a popup in russian that no one underatands everything works just fine. Libre Office has the option to change interface language (It will in Bernie Lomax to - I understand that it is not important for testing). But some Joker must have convinced the Russians that Norwegians mostly speak Nynorsk - in fact less than 25 %, do and Norwegian Bokmål is not there!
Somehow I have a feelleing that it will be no easy task to get it in there either (My Russian is lousy).
The Interface translation is Better in Bernie Lomax - Rosa lacks a lot.
ROSA 2012 comes with Amarock - Bernie Lomax has CLementine.
The sound works out of the box in ROSA 2012 - It does not in Mandriva 2012.
I belive that Bernie Lomax starts way faster than ROSA 2012

That's a funny way to talk for someone who "would never disagree with our Guru"
Perhaps I should rephrase: VM installations are just as much a black box to me as hardware installations. It just seems, to this humble, unworthy, ordinary, run-of-the-mill, totally non-Über berserk, that, while the, clearly, proper VM installation will test some or most points of the installation, there might be some interesting points that are only exposed when installation to hard drive is tested.
Re: Mandriva
Hah where did I disagree?
I am even using your Guru words - hence the qute.
And the most important thing is the HW detection so me Plenty agree. But mesa likes to test in VB before my HW gets to enjoy it.
So as you see; I still don't dare to disagree
I just think the testing in VB has value because it should work there too.
