Re: Mandriva
Ah Thanks!
It seems to be pretty much on schedule then. Lots remains to be done it seems.

Some pretesting needed to avoid stupid looks....
This time the network connected but setting the GUI was still not possible (an error occured
). I cannot run mcc and drakX11 does not compute either. The Norwegian Locale was still fubared. I am using an old sun VB version.
Trying with foreign locale.....That works better but still no GI possible.
When I try to install nano I get:
I dunno how to get Bernie to dance
I am not funky enough....

Re: Mandriva
I tried with the x86_64 'non-free' iso, verified, a nice, fat 4.1G.
First, the splash menu includes a hardware detector, which I browsed through, starting memtest, then rebooted. Also, 'Boot from hard disk' worked fine. It's been a while since I've seen the 'rescue' option....mostly because the live disks don't support this, I guess. It was nice to see this and I tried command line. Next to do was "Install", which I did to a spare 24G partition...
Drunk Penguin is back!!!! I liked the cartoonish characters, user icons of that time but not everyone did. I see the release notes are labelled 2010.1, so maybe drunk penguin came from that time, I don't recall. The installer page template graphics include a splash of text along the lines of 2012 tech preview, so some new work has been done to graphics, at least. The overall appearance of the installer and its performance is excellent.
I was pleasantly impressed that all five of my disks were present in rescue and during installation, which has not been the case in recent snapshots/releases. I just added the Development software family and LXDE to the default choices and let it go.
Everything went quite smoothly, albeit I'm very familiar with this installer. Wired ethernet/dhcpd was straightforward and was working on first boot. The X configurator gave me an option for a very new looking nvidia driver, NVIDIA Driver Version: 302.11, and I only had to find my custom file in old /home for xorg.conf that lets me see 1280x800 resolution; I think this monitor really resists this choice through EDID or such.
There is one oddity and I've seen this before. After logging in, the familiar splash screen just fades to black, no wall paper, but Rosa launcher and other little widgets get drawn there. e.g.:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1286780/images/ ... rkness.png
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1286780/images/bemypillow.png
I am working, now, from the first boot and I am very favorably impressed.
MandrivaUpdate popped up but wanted to remove drakconf and other important sorts of software, so that is still WIP, I guess.
I wanted to edit those screenies for size but, when I clicked on 'Open with' in Glenview, Glenview crashed, so I just give the url (1280x800).
Thanks very much, POK, and all who made this. It's looking good!

Re: Mandriva
Great you installed it on actual hardware! I am in VB I agree with the install process and drunken penguin. But I am not able to get set any combination that will give me a working GUI so far.
But I got jealous, so I am downloading a different iso now

Re: Mandriva
@viking, try next time ctrl+alt+f1 or f2, do as we do with Arch on installation, and try startx in tty - should give you some useful info (or at least some info) - try drakconf command.
Sorry, also, while in tty, try typing in drak and hit the tab key - that will give you in the list that comes up a way to set up the network (the drak command for it).

Yes, it seems to me a test in virtual machine is not a 'proper' test.
I pm'ed POK about my feedback, here, as I can't post to his notice @ mdvforum but don't know if he even gets notifications.
Busy man, he, if it is he, no posts, no visits.

In tty, you should also be able to type mcc in init 3 and get a text mode for Mandriva's Control Center. Not sure if they're still doing that though.

Re: Mandriva
I tried that with the dual CD iso - that did not work. Trying DVD i586 version now...
And Bernie is dancing!

Of course I would never disagree with our Guru so I agree with him
Even on the bit where the background was "black"
A rightklick on the desktop and adding a background takes care of that - so who cares?
The media was added from the DVD so I went to MCC and added media from cyberspace - that went pretty much totally automatic.
I removed the DVD media and added the non-free media and currently the update is running....
Video coming up
While we are waiting for the video - the update froze the VB so I had to use the "Swedish Button" and got db trouble after that.
Rolf can you confirm the freeze during update after removing the DVD repos and adding the cooker repos?
It might just be me running to much at one time here...

Re: Mandriva
You guys might want to go check proyvind's twitter and see our last communication. It seems Bernie's(?) a bit shy. At least, I think that's who he was talking about, anyway. My twitter's still at @DedannaRocks.
So, drunk penguins, eh? I was thinking it was somewhere around the 2005-2006 area of time. I ran a check, and sure enough, Funda Wang (remember her?), at the Mandriva 2006 install party.

Re: Mandriva
Yes, there's a screen very like that particular cross-eyed penguin graphic in the installer that dissolves to a penguin with clear eyes, which part seems new but I might just have overlooked it, before.
Re: Mandriva
I had to push the "Swede button" (se edit above").
When I booted back in the db was fubared so I did a:
And a:
And restarted the update - this time it went through nicely
Cheking if the auto orphans removal works... I guess so it removed a lot but some protests on kernel-devel.
Here is a video of the first login after install:
