I remember about 3-4 (maybe 5?) years ago, Mandriva still had E16 & E17 on a very old version, and had never updated it from that. I remember a thread at the forum (would take ages to find; it's been too long) that got someone to update them both to working state. Once updated, I tried again with E16, but it still wouldn't work.

I'm wondering if they've kept up with updates for them.

TBH, I like the Enlightenment distro a lot better than trying to slap E16 & E17 into another distro. Lots of multimedia goodies in it, that one can never appreciate the full scope of unless they run the distro.
Enlightenment powered: The Enlightenment window manager provides a desktop featuring a fast, light, very flexible environment that still offers eye candy and all the necessary resources to run your day to day applications. Elive includes E16, for speed and stability, along with a special version of E17 selected from cvs (regularly updated through Elive's test branch repository. Most of the programs built on top of the Enlightenment Foundation Libraries are also included.

I always had a soft spot for Enlightenment.
