Tolerance - what's that?

Postby viking60 » 06 Apr 2010, 21:33

We speak of it we like to think we are it, and we definitely hate all the people that are not. They should be shot- right? If not - what is your definition of tolerance? Here is an attempt to give mine:

Tolerance means that you have to tolerate something that you do not like. If you agree and like the person and the views, there is no need for tolerance. Because we are not like Jesus, we are not always able to love our enemies - then tolerance comes in. The absolutely wrong people can have their say with the absolutely wrong and horrible opinion. Without me stopping them.
Here is an example:
I was walking across a bridge one day, and I saw a man standing on the
edge, about to jump off. I immediately ran over and said "Stop! Don't
do it!"

"Why shouldn't I?" he said.

I said, "Well, there's so much to live for!"

"Like what?"

"Well ... are you religious or atheist?"

"Religious."

"Me too! Are you Christian or Jewish?"

"Christian."

"Me too! Are you Catholic or Protestant?"

"Protestant."

"Me too! Are you Episcopalian or Baptist?"

"Baptist."

"Wow! Me too! Are you Baptist Church of God or Baptist Church of the

Lord?"

"Baptist Church of God."

"Me too! Are you Original Baptist Church of God, or are you Reformed
Baptist Church of God?"

"Reformed Baptist Church of God."

"Me too! Are you Reformed Baptist Church of God, reformation of 1879, or
Reformed Baptist Church of God, reformation of 1915?"

"Reformed Baptist Church of God, reformation of 1915!"

To which I said, "Die, heretic scum!" and pushed him off.

And here

I have no real definition for it. I'm one of those that if I like you and can tolerate you, you know it. If not, you know it.
I'd rather be a free person who fears terrorists, than be a "safe" person who fears the government.

So you are pretty much like example no. 1 then? :D
Seriously - I think people know - as you say. But does the tolerance not come in with the people who know you don't like them?
Is it not about functioning with your cell mate that is locked up with you (George Bush?)?

I could function quite well with GWB in the cell with me.

I could function at killing him quite well. Then, I'd get on with functioning the rest of the day.

The only functioning I couldn't do at this point would be to function at anything that requires the use of my legs, because I don't have much use of my legs left.

But with GWB being there, it would either be kill him or go on about my day ignoring him.

I could do it either way. No problem. I just prefer to put him out of everyone's misery.

Of course, going off strict logic, an eye for an eye... he killed enough people (illegally). Why shouldn't he die?

Yeah thats tolerance all right. I can see you agree with Bush on the death penalty issue. That might be a common ground? He kills the people he does not like and you kill the people you don't like. I now understand why the "wild west" was in America ("This town aint big enough for the two of us").
You Americans are exotic :D

Ignoring him would be tolerance though.

To be absolutely honest, I don't believe in killing. But, someone like GWB is a rare instance where it needs to happen. I'm not the only one that thinks so. Yes, let's get other opinions.

I start out giving everyone the benefit of the doubt. If I don't like something, subsequently, I tend to be outspoken about that, let the chips fall where they may, the fur fly!

Yes I have slight feeling that you and dedanna dislike him. The ultimate tolerance test - so to speak.
The good news is; you don't have to tolerate him any more. Now it is those who disagree with you, that have to do the tolerating for a few years.
