Facebook admits leaking personal data for over a year.

Facebook admit that they have been leaking personal data due to technical error.
It is this finding and suggesting friends function that also sendt over personal info like emails and phone numbers.
No bad intentions - simply a case of not being able to control that wast amounts of data.

And Facebook are open about it - that part anyway.

So you should not use your real name and phone number with these companies - no matter what they say.
This proves that they cannot be trusted - even if they want to take your privacy seriously.

We've concluded that approximately 6 million Facebook users had email addresses or telephone numbers shared

And if it is requred to use their services - there is a sollution:
Don't use them

Facebook has no indications on that this bug has been exploited maliciously:

We currently have no evidence that this bug has been exploited maliciously and we have not received complaints from users or seen anomalous behavior on the tool or site to suggest wrongdoing

That leaves the question:
Would it be possible to expolit this bug "friendly"? And who would be such a friendly candidate?

You've just explained why I had such a heckuva time downloading my FB data so I could deactivate my FB. I requested, over the period of two months, the archive. When you do this, it sends you an email with the link to download it, once it's put together and processed. Every single time, the email would say "archive failed", no link to download. I kept wondering why, as that whole time I was wanting badly to deactivate, and get off the damn thing, but I wasn't going to do it without the archive.

I'm betting this went on for more than just "the next day" like they say there. I've seen their bugs go on forever... some have been there since I first got on FB.

Finally, just 2-3 weeks ago(?), the email came back with a link. I was able to download my data, and all was good, so I deactivated right then, and am hoping that at some point my FB will go away permanently and completely.

Are you sure that your data is save with you, or you just got a copy. You account is never deleted, just "inactive". If you decide to change your mind and drink some more Kool-Aid. You will be surprised how neat is to get all you stuff back as you left it. That way you do not have to work hard restoring your data.

The best thing everybody can do is stop feeding the system trolls.

I don't care what they do with it. It won't be added to, so they can shove it up their arses for all I care. They suggest encrypting it on the hdd, but it's like... why? lol.

'sides, I didn't leave for them mining info, as stated already. I left for them lying about mining info when I had known good and damn well for at least the last two years they were doing it, and Zuckerberg was in with the CIA on it (and the FBI). That part's fine with me. I actually like it, as I can tell the bastards what I think if they listen. What I don't like is being lied to about it.
