Just calm down - You are not screwed at all (Manjaro Linux wise): :-D

Manjaro does NOT update the kernel version to the latest kernel during pacman -Syu ! It does update your kernelversion say 3.18 to the latest version of kernel 3.18.

You can easily add and remove all the kernels you want - so if you want 4.2 like I just installed you can do that via the Manjaro Settings manager.

With the command line you can list all the kernels installed with:

Code: Select all

mhwd-kernel -li

For adding kernel 4.2 you can do a

Code: Select all

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux42

Have a look here

Manjaro lets you pick your kernels so here is my mhwd-kernel -li

Code: Select all

mhwd-kernel -li
Currently running: 4.2.0-1-MANJARO (linux42)
The following kernels are installed in your system:
   * linux314
   * linux41
   * linux42

This is different in Manjaro compared to Arch

In other words: If you do not install a newer kernel you are going to stay with 3.18 in Manjaro forever. 3.18 will be patched and updated but never to another version - like 3.19 or 4.1 etc
Manjaro 64bit on the main box -Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz and nVidia Corporation GT200b [GeForce GTX 275] (rev a1. + Centos on the server - Arch on the laptop.

No. If Manjaro works I'll move on to Arch.

I can't do jack without a connection. Kernel 3 does not have the drivers I need for the wireless, not working anyway. I've been reading up on this since before I decided to wipe and load.

I've download the dvd for openSUSE. It's on the 4.1 kernel. I think I'll dump the Mageia usb flash stick, and put the openSUSE dvd on it, try that. Hopefully there will be a live element to it. Let's hope it works. If it does, I can be in Linux at least for a time while I decide what to do.
