chakra

Postby viking60 » 22 Mar 2010, 23:51

Having successfully installed Arch in my virtualbox (kde and gnome) I wanted to try chakra. This GUI should make life easier. I downloaded the Live DVD and it fires up nicely. So I went for the install. I made two ext4 partitions and a swap partition, and mounted root and home (and swap). And basically clicked next.
So this was easy - And I was looking forward to see my KDE desktop so I turned off the machine and "removed" the DVD. The system boots fine and - no GUI  Ok so I went to /etc/inittab and uncommented the kdm line (I would have thought chakra toke care of that).
-Nothing
I cheked my demons in /etc/rc.conf
-Nothing
I dissected /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
-Nothing

I installed gnome and changed the settings accordingly - Nothing. This thing can really eat your hamster! Oh well - I was warned :( I fail to see how chakra is useful though, when it is easier to install Arch.
Feel free to show me the error of my ways :D

Lemme try installing it on my other hdd - see what I can do.

I think it would be helpful to know your hardware specs, etc. etc.

I think it would also be wise to hide this thread from Samwise_gamgee LOL.

Interesting. AnshulJain runs it, and swears by it. Samwise_gamgee states he loved it. I think I'll try tomorrow when I'm done shopping (which could be midnight lol). (Saturdays are my "hey" days; the days I go to the Air Base here and turn some airmen's heads lol,,, well, I do get some shopping in, too).

Guess I should explain that. Being 50, I take pride in still not looking much less than I did when I was 25.

A friend of mine and I, we go to shop for groceries, for whatever else we need, at the air base here... except, we do it dressed a certain way. We don't act on things. It's just a great ego boost to get the looks. Saturdays are my "hey days", and I really enjoy them. Great de-stresser from the work week!

Man, it's great to be single and free, and be able to be free-spirited. :)

I look like a million dollars and it is all wasted because I am allready married. What a waist - you poor poor women out there. (Oh well I have my hobbies).
And chakra still sux

Poor you, for being married LOL. And, for not being able to get Chakra going.

This is also posted under Arch - This is how you get the chakra KDE working on a functioning Arch installation:
I have got a working dual boot Gnome/KDE (chakra version). Gnome works fine by following the documentation on Arch.
Now when following the instructions on chakras pages on adding KDE (repositories), it will crash if you download the full version - for sure!
Here is the fix:

After having installed KDE according to the instructions on the chakra pages:
Install qimageblitz

Code: Select all

pacman -S qimageblitz

This file is not correctly pulled when installing the chakra kde.
This will let you log in to KDE but plasma will crash after 10 sec.

To fix this new error you must remove :

Code: Select all

pacman -Rd kdemod-networkmanagement-networkmanager-plasmoid

(I also moved the chakre repositories up before the Arch repos in /etc/pacman.conf but I don't think that matters)

It now works :!:

And oh I forgot: If you want to switch between your desktops you can only do that by activating the cube animation effect and switch with CTRL+F1 F2 F3 etc.

I went on to test Shaman the GUI for pacman:

Code: Select all

pacman -Sy kdemod-shaman2-svn
Installation went fine and I started it,
Wow it looked good so I searched for and installed gtk-recordMyDesktop.
To be honest I was not even sure if it was installed (It was). Countless popups and warnings made the program act like a virus.
To sum it all up. This has been an exiting and disappointing experience. I like the idea of a GUI for pacman and I will probably use it if it ever gets stable. For now - Chakra is not even close.

Again, I will say in their defense, that they are very young yet. I am not so sure they're even out of beta yet.

Let's see what happens when they mature a bit more.
