I've got the x86_64 iso and will try to install in VirtualBox, when I figure out how! After work, maybe.
Re: Mageia 1, Beta 2 released
Yes that will probably work just fine. I have it in VB. Video coming up.....
If there are some brakes in there it is due too my friend Gizmo who insisted on walking on my keyboard.

Thanks for the picture show, not too bad at full screen, except maybe fonts in terminal need a little bolding to come across, here, and Gizmo's Chopin is pretty sweet, too. I'll sett opp my vm pretty soon, maybe after pannekakers.

Re: Mageia 1, Beta 2 released
I did install in VirtualBox, by adding the iso into storage on a new Linux x86_64 machine. It worked, booted, but did not display in a full window, as my XP machine will do, and I thought it might be a matter of guest additions. So, I found a menu entry under Devices to install guest additions, which did not echo anything done, except I was then able to find a script, VboxLinuxAdditions.run, which I did run, as root. It told me there was already some vboxadditions installed and strongly recommended I exit, uninstall it from the host. "Valhalla!!!", says I, ignoring the advice and continuing. IIRC, some dkms stuff happened, the additions were reported as installed, and I lost X.
..is part of the error when trying to startx. In Mageia, I tried removing the vboxadditions module with dkms, running XFdrake and using the proprietary nvidia driver but that, also, does not work. In my Mandriva host, I have:
I do see, @ google, similar reports of an abi mismatch when trying to run the additions with newer xorg. I'm not too sure what is going on, suspect a reinstall of the machine will be my way back. Thought I'd post as it's a learning opportunity!

Re: Mageia 1, Beta 2 released
I use VB 3.1.8 rc and get this message to update every time I start it. Seems to be an Oracle takeover thing. I tried to update and that is simply impossible here.
So I am stuck with my (working) good ol' Sun VB.
Did I understand you correctly - you have fubared your Mandriva x86_64 GUI?

No, my 'host' is fine. I did all the playing around in the Mageia 'machine' and that is where X doesn't work. Something to do with installing the linux additions from the script included with Virtual Box. I think a re-install of the Mageia machine ought to set things right, will report when I try.
Re: Mageia 1, Beta 2 released
On the VirtualBox thing, what I surmise is, since, when Mageia Beta 2 is booting, I see the kernel message that mga virtualbox guest additions are installed, I messed things up when I tried installing the vbox Linux guest additions that come with:
I tried many things within mga's virtual installation, changing drivers around to nvidia and nv in XFdrake, uninstalling module with dkms, but could not get X back. So, I reinstalled in VM and all is fine, leaving the automatically used virtualbox virtual video driver to do the job. I still don't know how to get fullscreen for the mga virtual machine or if I can but that must be a VirtualBox issue.
In virtual Mageia Beta 2, I am impressed with how Systemsettings now simply prompts for administrator password when saving 'Convenience' auto-login etc. choices in the Login Manager. Formerly, all choices were greyed-out to unprivileged users and calling Systemsettings with kdesu or some other arcane process was required. Albeit this is a KDE improvement, good job!
My brief experience with the virtual Beta 2 reveals no glitches, it seems good. Maybe I will find more time to play with it.

Re: Mageia 1, Beta 2 released
Mageia has decided against implementing Iron Browser:
https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=902
There are some interesting links there to market that Iron Browser is a scam. In short the company has not rewritten the entire code as they claim and the changes are minimal.
But non of the Links can establish that SRware is lying about the differences (as far as I can see):
As shown here and here
If that holds water then I do not care much if it is funny, easy or even possible to turn of in the regular Chromium. I do not want Google to monitor my installation with an unique Installation-ID!
The important point is the privacy issue. It seems that Iron can improve your privacy but that SR-ware has been acting stupidly.
Still the Ironbrowser will be available in the MiB repos and they work in Mageia.
Edit:
It seems that SR-ware are not providing the tarballs so it will not be possible to have it (and maintain it) in a distro repo.
It works and gets updated from AUR though

Yeah, but AUR keeps behind some. At least that's what I've found.
I'd rather be a free person who fears terrorists, than be a "safe" person who fears the government.
