Setting up Freenas

I have heard a lot of good things about it so I thought I try it. I went to http://freenas.org and downloaded the full install.xz from here. This shold be easy to dd to an USB-pen, but it failed with my 8 GB Kingston Datatraveler. So I gave it up and burned the i386.iso to a CD. The plan is to mount the USB-pen into the machine in question and install Freenas on it from the CD-rom. This is neccessary because othervise Freenas would ocupy the entire disk I plan to use So I toke another broken laptop with 150 GB disk and put the USB in the slot, and boted it from my freshly burned ISO. I installed it to the USB and it discovered the dhcp and ended with an information on what IP-adress to use from another computer. So far it had been pure CLI, but according to the documentation there should be a nice GUI available when accessed through another computer. Happily and full of expectations I danced on to another computer and entered the IP in the browser address bar. To be continued........

It worked!

I started some important services:

And set up a user and gave the disk a name. Since I only have one disk here, Freenas is not all that justified.
It's strong point is clearly to administer a series of disks. But I guess I could hook a lot of USB-disks up with that Laptop and let Freenas organize all of them.

There are a lot of options so the setup could take some time (I will get back to the details later on, if I can find the time)

But I am listening to music from it now and I have set up windows shares so the nekt thing to test is if my Win7 can find it.
It cannot find any of my Linux boxes so this is exiting. Maybe MS is going easier on Unix....

Yeah, if it won't find my other Linux boxes, then it's no good to me at all, sorry. :\

I think you misunderstand. My Windows7 is moody and cannot find the Windows shares on Freenas. This is not a big problem since I use Linux so I am not loosing to many calories over it.
There is a problem connecting to Freenas in KDE with fish - the KDE ssh counterpart- (IT does not work in Dolphin) but it goes just fine with Nautilus.
EDIT:
I found out that fish and ssh does not compute in Dolphin or Konqueror, BUT it works perfectly fine with sftp!
So entering

I am confused at an even higher level now
