KDE 4.5.4 is released

Postby viking60 » 03 Dec 2010, 07:40

KDE has launched the bugfix version 4.5.4. They did not update KDEpim. It might be a bugfix release for KDEpim too later on, but that is not likely to have many changes since they are concentrating on KDEpim4.6.

The next version of KDE will be 4.5.5 and it is due on the 4th of January 2011.
KDE 4.6 is expected on the 26th January.

Checking Fedora. Had a few KDE updates to 4.5.3 early this morning. Who knows, they might've updated it. *shrug

And... nope. Will deal with Arch in a bit.

KDE has been pulling a lot of CPU power lately. That has not been fixed with this version.

You're right, they didn't update kdepim, but there is something they did update:

Code: Select all

:) ls /var/cache/pacman/pkg | grep kdepim
kdepimlibs-4.5.4-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz

With that, they laid the groundwork for kdepim to come on in any time.

Yeah, I had to quit using KDE lately because of both CPU and RAM usage... :( Too bad 'cause I'd really like to give it a go again...

I had been using KDE since KDE2.x (since Mandrake 8.x). The overhead required for the whole nepomuk, akonadi, strigi, mysql monster does not seem to me to be justified by the added functionality. In fact, for me, it provides nothing additional that is of any use. I've recently switched to Gnome. Since Mandriva has decided to end official support for Gnome, I've also switched to Fedora (currently F13).

When CentOS 6 is released, I intend to give it a serious trial. The four year product lifetime is very attractive. :)

Hey Jim, F14 actually runs better, even though I heap a bunch of sarcasm at Fedora in general. If you're up for it, try upgrading... I *may* keep it now, not sure.

Edit: I meant it runs better *overall*, as in, *in general* - haven't tried KDE in it yet though. Will do later.

Welcome to the Gnomers Jkerr it took a while. :D
I am a bit skeptical to the dropping of Gnome in Mandriva too.
Gnome does not put any strain on the CPU even with all the blows and whistles from Compiz and Xorg activated. It just is more stable I think.
Centos is a typical Server distro and I use it just for server stuff, but I guess you can make a fairly good desktop out of it - I just never tried. I did with Debian some time ago and that worked just fine.
I met Arch and fell in love. So there is no going back for me now. That thing is rock solid and stable!
This might be only because I am in total control of what I install and there is absolutely no bloat. You will need two PC's to install it: One with the Arch Beginners Guide opened and the one you want to install on.
It will take some time but you will be in control of all the settings - and the Wiki is just great. I am running Gnome and KDE with slim (not gdm) and that thing just works. The KDE update was painless even immediately after its release.
That makes me wonder what all the others are doing with it, because it is stable right out of the box without all that integration stuff that probably brakes things.
Arch is more stable than Fedora IMO. But Fedora is the dynamic force in the Linux world, so it is bleeding edge. Even if it cannot keep up with Arch on the software bit.
Still I kind of like Fedora 14 so far, but I am not able to form a qualified opinion yet. I wrote down my impressions regarding Fedora 13, somewhere else here and I think that still goes.
I just updated that one (the Fedora 13 install). And I am currently playing with it. :tux5:

As Smokey Robinson says, "I second that emotion"...

Edit: I really have to say that Arch has a hold on me...
