I burned the latest live CD and it booted pretty quickly. All 7 drives on 4 or 5 controllers and internet via the router was automatically set up. It's clean and snappy, a reasonable complement of programs loaded with, according to the software installer, 30,274 in repositories.

IIUC, it incorporates the "cloud computing" concept that Mandrake founder Gael Duval employs for his new project, Ulteo, but I'm sure others here know much more about it.

p.s. The screenies are looking a little fuzzy in the Preview, while posting from Ice, maybe due to my resizing with the onboard picture manager. Otherwise, the nouveau driver was nicely configured for my EVGA 9500 GT and graphics are clear, sharp on my monitor.

In general I am a bit paranoid about clouds - because you leave your data "out there" and they are going to stay there forever.
It is always nice to share with your friend etc, What they mean is "We want to monitor your interests exactly and accurately so that we can place our adds, where it counts". The lists over people that are interested in Dodge wipers can be bought by the car industry and you get a mailing (of course after they have credit checked you).
Or the party pics that you thought were super cool when you where 18, come back to haunt you when you run for President at the age of 50.

The price for being young and stupid gets to high - I know I would be in trouble if I had those opportunities when I was 18
This is not exclusive for the cloud (Just a fancy name for an out of house server), Facebook is in the clouds and so is youtube.

Integrating this in the OS is when this gets dangerous, because it is harder to tell the difference between local and external data.
(Did you store your credit card no. on your box or on Googles or what). Scary stuff

The services all have to be tempting and marvelous or else no one will use them - and with the awareness of the above it could work.
A certain degree of paranoia is healthy though.

Yes I'll have a look if this is an OS or a special "browser" accessing Servers. It sure looks like it is a browser with no local apps installed.
Edit:
Well it behaves like Linux it is very easy to install and all the languages and keyboards are selected correctly. It is fast and uses synaptec. Installation via the terminal is no problem.
There also is a software manager - I installed Openoffice writer with it. I believe that application is not on my box. I will test some more...

Well it is a Linux it is lightweight and sexy.
I am a bit like Woody Allen here; he does not trust air that he cannot see. I do not trust anyone to take care of my data more than me.
But peppermint looks like a plain distro. I agree with you Rolf it is actually very nice. It is the Peppermint-ICE bit that is scary too me I guess - so I am downloading it now, to have a look.

Peppermint Ice has a nice welcome to ubuntu when you fire it up, so it is an ubuntu derivate. I cannot tell much difference from Peppermint. That makes me nervous, because it is supposed to be a diostro with a heavy cloud orientation. I just do not dare to use it. I don't know what is happening under the hood.

So this is what it looks like when your application is in the clouds. I hope the files I store with it cannot be traced by the server (but I think they can). And you have to trust the server of course.
