Small war between Arch and Manjaro

The Arch developer Alan McRae has found time to criticize Manjarao.
He is making a valid security point too - but then he really has a problem with letting it go...

If you ask about an AUR package in the Arch forum you will swiftly get the answer that they (Alan) do not support AUR so they cannot be bothered.

If you use AUR then you are responsible for everything that happens etc etc..
Which is OK - even if you as the poor AUR user may feel a bit left out.

Given this attitude it is a bit surprising that Alan has so much time for criticizing Manjaro. One would think that it is the responsibility of the Manjaro users to avoid those security holes not Alan's and not Arch.

One favorite hobby (of some - not Alan) in the Arch forum is to tell people that Arch really is not for them - ( I am working on that myself - because I want to be that sophisticated and exclusively cool too.. ).

One should think that they would be thrilled about a distro like Manjaro because now they have somewhere to go?

Instead there is this reaction that resembles jealousy (well Manjaro is bigger than Arch on Distrowatch ).

I like both Arch and Manjaro so personally I see no need for this.

The Manjaro people have a nicer, less rude, forum IMO

It would seem that the Arch "family" is every bit as dysfunctional as the Mandriva "family".

Why can't people be polite to one another?

Yup I second that

But the Arch forum has a lot of quality - and to be fair; most people there are just fine (Fukawi is a member here too, so he is great ). There are some exeptions there that I try to avoid a dialog with though.

So I still think Mandriva holds the record

Most people using Manjaro like Arch which is the mothership - so this slap in the face was uncalled for IMHO.

Regarding Arch being more up to date than Manjaro:
This is not the case with Octopi - There Manjaro is more up to date. I have translated it and the translation is not complete in Arch while it is in Manjaro.

This is AUR in Arch and thus Arch is not responsible and not suporting it etc etc but the fact remains:
If you use Arch in combination with AUR (which most people do) then Manjaro might have the most up to date quality software - it can happen.

So they should be friends and cooperate - it would make both systems better.

An example:
I am a skydiver which is admittedly more insecure than a walk in the park.
At this point Alan could point out the idiocy of jumping off airplanes that are perfectly in order - and he would be missing the point.

...And I would still do it.

And maybe this simply was a case of Alan getting bored again - usually he has a great sense of humor:

Yes, this was my very first gut reaction too.

However, AUR should not be officially supported by Arch. It's proprietary stuff in there, as well as really good old proggies that are not even still maintained by their developers, among other things (speaking of which, I'm hoping they still have Amarok 1.4.x in there, and when I can get a computer going again, a couple other things too). At the same time, this very thing leaves AUR in the public domain, so Arch developers shouldn't bitch that it's there for others to use.
