I can't imagine text-input on touchscreen ever being more ergonomic than a keyboard, aka typewriter for the intertubes. Image

Nope - That can never be as efficient unless we get perfect Voice recognition. I have tried that at Work with an IBM program. I tell you it was way much faster to write it down.
I challenge everyone to try to write faster than me on a tablet - while I am on a PC. Call me over confident but I will win every time! +1

We need to look into the future and keyboards are dying. Is a clumsy mechanical device, even the mice as much as we use now, is dying too.
What prevents me for using a touchpad like a laptop with the size of the mouse pad?

Another one that I saw was a Laser Keyboard. Projects the letters on the desk, therefore, it looks like a soft-keyboard on a tablet. The advantage is that no Real State is taken from the Tablet for you to type. Another one is a system that looks at your eyes and points with them like you would do with a pointing device; perhaps if you blink you can do the click and double click with right / left click by using your eyelids. Sounds far fetch but is not a crazy idea. I should patent that :greetings

Anyway, the advantage of the keyboard over voice recognition is the quietness. You need to talk to write so imagine an office and everybody squawking at the same time talking to the computers  So a soft-keyboard has to come up; tapping on a rubber mat is not only soft to your finger tips but removes the claticky clack of the keys while been pressed.

Hm yes that "eye keyboard" does exist for handicapped already. So it does work - maybe it can be developed to something fast. But that takes a lot of imagination :)

With previous versions, it was possible to choose a "classic" look rather than the default of Unity; now, for good or ill, the left-hand vertical menu is a permanent desktop element.

......so what will happen if I don't have the necessary drivers or hardware to run Unity?
I remember trying a previous version when it complained that I don't have what it needs and reverted to classic gnome. Only after I installed the Nvidia driver I was able to run Unity.
Is it now Unity able to run in every scenario?

It must be. It works in Virtualbox, much unlike Gnome3. With VESA.
Gnome 3 will go to Fallback mode, to the Gnome-Panel (which many people prefer). I am reluctant to use the term "works" though. I really really dislike Unity.
And I quite like Gnome3, so I am not immune to new impulse and different approaches. I like the search function it suggests alternatives for every letter I type. It is almost as good as in Gnome3. I don't mind the icons on the left. But what have they done with workspaces? :berserk2

Giving up on Unity does not mean that you have to give up on Ubuntu so I restored good old gnome like this:

Code: Select all

sudo aptitude gnome

then:

Code: Select all

sudo aptitude remove unity

Accept to delete the Ubuntu desktop.
Reboot
And the world is fine again with good ol' Gnome.Image

As one could suspect Ubuntu is to appear on smartphones with the Unity desktop.

Canonical estimates that it will take Ubuntu two years to get there. That might just work. On a laptop or PC Unity simply does not IMHO.
