It's way way too limiting.

Is there a reason for this?

Search is always tradeoff. If you want to find everything down to the letter it will be heavy on resources. I don't think this board is much different from any other phpbb board.
I have done nothing particular to limit it.

The problem is this. If I look for just about anything, it's telling me that it's too common of a word, or I get some other feedback that isn't a search result. Sometimes a user here has written down something that is helpful, and it's needed, but has long since been buried.

I've tried code, I've tried generalities, things that should stand out. I get the same results every time - lack of results. I'm not looking for everything, I'm looking for specific things, and no, they're not common. This happens no matter how I search, more often than not.

I understand the resources thing, I just don't think it's helpful being as tight as it is.

Thanks.

Yeah phpbb does not have the greatest of search functions. It could be to common simply because it appears too often here.
Play around with the advanced search that might help.

Yeah, I have. Same "results".

I realize that I lied above.
I have set the common word threshold to 95% (not easy to remember all I have done :) )

So if your word is to common it must appear in over 95% of the posts here and that is quite frankly a useless search anyway.

I will reduce it to 40 and rebuild the index. That might improve things (but I doubt it) .

The index is currently running so wait with your checks for 15 minutes

And in the name of democracy - do we really need to search for posts that occur in more that 30% of all posts here?

Test it an lemme know if there is an improvement.

Edit:
The indexing is done - and words occurring in more than 40 % of the posts will be to common.
(don't expect Google results though)
Hm maybe it is time to implement Google search
...
Yup it was

No, I'd say (realizing the hassle of doing it) to set it to 25%, seriously, and implement a different alternate search engine (the reasons stated in the other thread here in Board Info for alternate search engine).

Seriously, I think 25% is more than plenty. We need to get as specific search results as we can.

The problem is that if you search for ssh you will get way to many hits and you cannot search for ssh+thin clients - well you can - but you will have to stand on your head and crap in a 90 degree angel before you get the result.

30% that you mentioned then? What I'm trying to do is get the number to the absolute lowest we can go, yet get the specific results we need. Make sense?

Thank you for checking into it. It's very much appreciated. For me myself, I rely on searches to find something I've forgotten in general, or have forgotten how to do when I come up from re-installations. Elsewise, I seem to find things OK without the search function.

Maybe we need more feedback on what others here use it for, and go from there?

Sure I'll set it to 30 %
