And away we go!

Doing one final backup on my system, using:

Code: Select all

rsync -avvv /home/dedanna/ /media/My_Book/backup/mdv-2008-1-backup/home/dedanna/ --ignore-existing

Then, it will be time to slap on Arch and Fedora 13! :)

This time it will be clean installs.

Ended up having to change that btw. rsync was having too many issues with too many files. Changed it to:

Code: Select all

cp -auvvv /home/dedanna/ /media/My_Book/backup/mdv-2008-1-backup/home/dedanna/

The -u switch in it updates only files that are newer, and add the missing ones as well.

Code: Select all

-a, --archive                same as -dpR
-u, --update                 copy only when the SOURCE file is newer
than the destination file or when the
                                 destination file is missing
-v, --verbose                explain what is being done

Never seen anything copy as fast as good ol' CLI. :)

Yes the single most impressive thing for a windows user is the speed of copying.
rsync is behaving nicely here now (I had some issues that went away with an update), and it is fast.
I copy from my main box to an USB-HD (called B_disk) attached to my server via ssh.

Code: Select all

rsync --delete -azvv -e ssh /home/thomas thomas@viking60-server:/media/B_disk/Backup
It takes the whole enchilada - and believe me that is a lot :D

I think this will give you an endless path :D

Code: Select all

rsync -avvv /home/dedanna/ /media/My_Book/backup/mdv-2008-1-backup/home/dedanna/ --ignore-existing

How about:

Code: Select all

rsync -avvv /home/dedanna/ /media/My_Book/backup/

The folders will be created by rsync.

It needs to go in the folder of it that I specified, and I know it will do it, because I got that there in the first place with rsync. It's something in filenames right now; need to go through them with a fine tooth comb at some point. I could've fixed it I'm sure, but just didn't want to take the time LOL.

I'm off for installations now. I think I'll install Arch first, and then Fedora. Let Fedora take the boot loader, to save time once again in not having to build grub for Arch. Besides, I want Arch for my primary. :)

Bye-bye Mandriva once and for all; I'm going to take the Mandriva drive out, and pop it in with my mobile docking bay when/if I want it again (will leave it as-is; who knows, maybe someday far in the future I'll want to play with this old 2008.1 box, or use it as temporary again), and install the two on the other two drives.

Just hope I can get USB support going in Arch this time, this issue was never resolved before the Arch drive crashed last time.

Have a good day, all.

Good strategy there - Arch first then Fedora. USB is working better in my Arch than Mandriva.
I plug MyBook in and out as i like, and the nice blue button appears and disappears as fast as I can plug - no worries. I dual boot KDE (Chakra repos) and Gnome. In Arch KDE is OK, don't ask why it just feels better than in Mandriva or Fedora. I use Gnome for the most part, as usual, though. Arch is as fast on my Pentium 3.2 GHz Box with Nvidia GeForce 9400, as Mandriva cooker is on my Intel Core i7 superduperbox. Correctly set up Arch is über fast.

Okay, so what do I gotta install and do to get usb support going? It's not seeing either one of my usb drives right now, and I could sure use them. Previous versions prior to 2009 I could get it going in a flash in Arch, but now, it's turning out to be a real bitch. Hotplugging's enabled, btw.

Thanks.

Never mind, got it to go after a reboot. :) Problem is, I don't know what exactly of the umpteen things I tried got it to go.

Now the problem is, I am not getting a menu on right-click. Not to copy or paste, or anything. Any clue what's up with that?

Thanks!

I'll have a look as soon as I get back to my Arch box...

Yeah, you need to get the hell out of Windows anyway. LOL.

C'ya, boss, I'm going to finally get some sleep. I'll deal with these little niggles after the Fedora 13 install what is now later on today.

Take care.

Hey, meant to mention that there's a new Arch release that just came out this month. Don't know what release you used to install with, but the new one totally ROCKS. archlinux-2010.05-core-i686.iso

I have heard of it but I allreaddy have installed - I look forward to using it on the next one. BTW rightclick is working fine here. I Probably just a matter of finishing up your installation. I'll see if I can get a list over what I have installed.
Have you installed xf86-input-penmount?
To find out I would reccomend that you add the chakra repositories (Yes even if you do not want KDE) and install shaman. It is a GUI installer. Do not use it for installing, it is buggy, but it is an easy way of listing the available and installed software.

When i search for usb i find that I have installed:
libusb
libusb1
usbutils

Also check that you have installed:
autofs and udisks + gnome-disk-utility

And you must install yaourt - that is an order :T :D
http://archlinux.fr/yaourt-en
It compiles any software nicely and is highly usable and addictive. You can use it exactly like pacman too:
pacman -Syu and yaourt -Syu will do the same.
I have also installed sudo it takes less time to get things done then.

Yeah, I'm going to have to install yaourt. I need gwibber, and it's not in the Arch repos. I tried to install it with the tar.gz that I found in the yaourt repos from my browser, but it's missing something like desktopcouch(?) in the pacman repos, and it needs it. setup.py failed. :(

Insofar as the libusb stuff, I have gnome-disk-utility, but ended up not needing it. The rest is installed. It ended up to be a matter of a reboot, was all to get the usb drives going.

yaourt, well, I'm not in to building packages really. I had started with Mandriva, but really just didn't get it even after Ann's "classes" on it. I'm more into reporting bugs on packages that are already there. I also don't get how to install yaourt repositories? Read a lot of "here's how to use it" stuff, but nothing on how to get it going. So, for now, I'm at a loss for my gwibber installation. Chakra repos, well, I've already got KDE installed; I install it because there are a tad few KDE programs that I use.

I don't have the penmount installed, what is it for?

F13 installation is getting going in just a few minutes. Will be offline for a while, then I need to go to the base today, so should be back later on this evening my time, with my grandson too! :) That boy is my pride & joy. :) I'm just hoping that Fedora 13 will find and see the Arch installation.

Thanks!
