Microsoft was one of the biggest and most influential tech businesses in the world - eight years ago. Back then 95 % of the consumer computers were powered by Windows. This has dropped to 20 % today. It looks like the competition has taken Microsoft completely by surprise.

The shift is mainly due to iOS and Android so this also indicates a shift from desktop computers to tablets.

It looks like the iPad is to "blame" , but there are other factors. Some claim that the declining economy has had this impact - but is the iPad that much cheaper than a desktop?
The Windows Vista release was not very well accepted but Windows 7 was.

People spent their money on a tablet and discovered that it pretty much replaces the desktop for their - not so sophisticated -everyday use.

Microsoft chipped in there and made Windows 8 for tablets and smartphones. By the looks of it they reacted to late - the money were already spent on Apple and Android Linux products. There is some small success to be reported though; it looks like Windows 8 has replaced blackberry as the no. 3 in the market. Many have doubted that they ever would be able to achieve that - but this is still small potatoes in comparison to Microsoft's standing as a tech company some years ago.

Their habit of controlling the tech market was consolidated with FUD and cross licensing - which basically means that you have to pay Microsoft protection money from being sued.

As a result Microsoft has a better result from "Licensing" Android than from Windows 8 on smartphones. There has been no time for real innovation because the company was to busy trying to consolidate their world leading market position.

It looks like Microsoft is representing the view that every Computer owner in the world should pay taxes to Microsoft. And they have had huge problems to explain why.
And their attempts to force the biggest gaming company - Valve - to accept less than desirable terms (or get excluded - there is always an "or else") made Valve switch to Linux as a platform - I can confirm that Valves steam works well on Linux.

In short Microsoft overestimated themselves - again.

The innovation for tablets was more or less a late copy of Apples invention and resulted in a stock of 6 million unsold tablets.
And those tablets are truly unusable because you cannot install anything else on them either because of Microsofts "secure" (UEFI) booting.

It backfired - Bigtime!

It is considered suicide to go for the traditional desktop - so nobody does.
Could there be a neglected market there - for someone (Linux) to pick up?

The statistics are clear:

Since the launch of tablets; PC- sales are down.

Is it because they do not want the PC - or is it because they do not want Windows 8 ?
