Dell as a Linux friendly computer

ImageI have had a thorough look at Dell lately and I see that they deliver a lot of server solutions with Linux (RedHat and SUSE).
On the laptop side they have Dell latitude that you can buy with Ubuntu 11.10 - (yes with that horrible Unity stuff - but it is Linux).
And they do deliver Laptops to their dealers without OS if they should so desire. I am also convinced that the pods and tabs of this world are a fashion thing, and that the need for a proper screen and keyboard will re-materialize.

So what I am after is this:

Do you have any experience with Dell? Lemme know!

I believe that doesn't happen even with Dells in the U.S. - it's mostly places like the UK. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I know that Dell is coming up with Linux, but don't think they've come that far here yet.

Well the Dell partners can have it - but I guess the customers don't want it.

Which is mind-boggling. I've spoken with many here in Colorado anyway, who would love a Linux computer, or to be able to install it without fear of losing their warranties. It would be nice also to see some hardware come out without the "Secure boot" or UEFI thing going on.

I thought at one time that Canonical was going to do something along the lines of getting computers sold with Ubuntu on them? Seems a great venture for those here in the U.S.

Well dell does alternatively come with Ubuntu, so they might have done something. It is just that no one knows it and the marketing is probably blocked by you know who.

i use dell laptops and desktops and they easily use linux ubuntu, knoppix, slax, puppy, and debian flavors
i have also installed debian, sms, ark, and arch on various dell servers!
i have had no problems with them at all.

the only time ive had problems with dell were the early optiplex gx series (very early windows xp)
they had to have an initialized hard drive to upgrade (these you had to order from dell at a horrendous cost)
got around this by installing linux
