The good old Arch box was ready for the thrash 5 years ago. But Arch saved it. Now the power supply is gone for the second time so it is time to call it a day.

Does 1 037 mean how many Euros (1487.80488 USD) it costs? No so cheap, in my world, if so. Many standards are different, from here to there. How's about putting together something from parts (sett op pannekakers)?

No it is about 172,- USD (could be slightly more because the Dollar is pretty weak these days.) The currency is NOK - Norwegian Kroner. Parts are more expensive than that. My superduper boxes are all special builds, so it is possible to build good machines with parts.
But it is not that easy to build a cheap box And those cheap boxes with Linux make them better than the expensive boxes with Windows. Could be some sensible business in that.
The superduper i7 boxes are only needed for running virtual machines (Virtualbox) here. In other cases that would be sufficient I think.

That's better! My thin client suffered a crash due to power outage, along with the rest of the domicile, just now. When PGE restored the juice, I had to boot it up and watch through ssh. Finally, the turtle server was serving, I could log in, and the webpage was online.

I've got reiserfs on all my desktop machines, booted back up, no sweat, as it has many times in the past (every time, iianm). My pupsave partition is a big ext3 on the thin client, I have the Puppy 4.31 iso installed to a smallish FAT32 partition at the beginning, as that was the last configuration I tried when it all seemed to work. I seem to recall this boot partition was not even mounted when Puppy 4.31 was running, so maybe it escaped the power outage that way. I don't know how Puppy deals with pulling the plug, squashfs and all sorts of voodoo, but I'm glad it just worked.

It would be nice to have it boot up automatically after a power failure. I looked through the BIOS. The power supply is very simple, just push a switch to turn on and boot the machine. I think something more sophisticated would be required for automatic boot after power outage.

In the office I used to solve problems like that with an UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply)
Here is a cheap one that will over bridge 15 minutes.
The can get pretty expensive so some research is recommended.

Thanks. I've thought of UPS but am a bit full up on devices. Maybe that is the best, combined with some software I seem to have heard about to gracefully shut down when line voltage goes kaput. I don't know if that is installable to this Puppy server. Since it draws less than 100W, it might limp along for a little more than 15 minutes but I am away from the server farm for lot longer periods, typically.

Yeah the question is if the outages typically are longer than 15 minutes. If they are not, you are not needed and can stay away eating pannekaker and checking out Norwegian nurses on the beach.
For the software solution I think the BIOS is your best bet.

Just as an fyi, my mother is on a Hewlett Packard computer; not much, maybe a 3.5GHz CPU with a gig or so of ram, on Windows XP. She lives in an area in Colorado where power outages are frequent, in particular when snow, etc. is bad, and thunderstorms come amundo.

She runs her computer, her HP laser printer (very old that thing), monitor, and her desk lamp on a UPS. Saves her a LOT of headache. If I could do it, I would - we get thunderstorms a lot here as well, being in the state just south of her. I'm also on reiserfs; there's nothing I won't put on reiserfs unless it absolutely is NOT an option (which is rare), purely because it reruns the transactions when you boot again, and things are well. There's a new deal I've seen on Arch with it as well. If you've rebooted 31 times with no issues, it will run fdisk anyway on boot, just for maintenance purposes.

Edit: Also, I've found that UPSes actually save room. Everything to one place, and one place for everything.

You can take all this with a grain of salt, but there it is.

It does that on ext4 too.
