Bug, or something else?

I've been reading about a kernel wireless bug, and if this is one, then I should report it.
From the Manjaro Live XFCE disk (which is on usb), wireless isn't working, even after inputting the info for it. If it weren't live media, I could run an iwconfig and post it here, but I can't without the wireless working.

Here's the hardware, the Qualcomm says it's working properly from Windows.

Any clue on what I can/should do? For the meantime, I'm going to load up the Mageia live media.

Thanks.

Looks like drivers aren't loading.
I had it start with non-free drivers this time, and wireless didn't go. I ran iwconfig, and wrote it down, not much to see at all:

Code: Select all

enp2s0    no wireless extensions
lo                no wireless extensions

Manjaro installation media manjaro-xfce-0.8.13.1-x86_64.iso - the iso was verified after downloading.

I'm wondering what will happen with Mageia.

Update: With Mageia, I have more info. It wanted me to download the Windows driver from ndiswrapper for the Realtek (but how is one supposed to do that without a connection?). I guess I'll have to try to find it from Windows.

Things to check:
Is the interface running - if not:

Code: Select all

ip link set wlan0 up

Still in trouble? Is dhcpcd running?

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl start dhcpcd

And in general some firewalls block everything if they are not running so they need to be started (not likely in your case)

Just wondering, I've been hearing about bugs with the Qualcomm and Realtek drivers in the 3.16 kernel. True?

I'll try what you've suggested.

Update:

Code: Select all

[manjaro@manjaro ~]ip link set wlan0 up
Cannot find device "wlan0"

[manjaro@manjaro ~]sudo systemctl start dhcpd
Failed to start dhcpd.service: Unit dhcpd.service failed to load: No such file or directory.
[manjaro@manjaro ~]

I am still wondering on drivers - that's what the Mageia disk said, that it needed the Windows drivers. I need to try it again from the Mageia disk and get the url it referred me to.

I got the exact same results with the Mageia disk. As always, information can be obtained, even if one forgets commands, from MCC. In "Detected hardware":

Code: Select all

Identification
Vendor - Qualcomm Atheros
Description - QCA6174 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter
Media Class - Network controller

Connection
Bus - PCI Express
PCI domain - 0
Bus PCI # - 3
--->Module unknown<---

I will also add that there is no "Set current driver options" button for the Qualcomm.
It's finding the RealTek just fine, and wants to use it, of course.

What I'd like to know is, if it has all the info on the Qualcomm, then wtf is the issue with just loading the driver?

I should add also that I no longer have the option to start Mageia with the non-free drivers, and with Mageia, on boot, I get a lot of "Failed to load Legacy module configuration" and "Failed to start Legacy module configuration." It wants me to run "systemctl fedora-something something." It goes by so fast I can't see the full command.
Must be because I have UEFI boot completely turned off, and also have disabled PXE boot to LAN in BIOS.
The one thing about Mageia I've noticed is that one can still hit the Esc key and watch the boot.

Thanks.

I cannot say anything about the drivers but you could check out the interfaces with:

Code: Select all

ip link show

or the good old:

Code: Select all

ifconfig -a

If the wireless interface is not there - then it will be hard to get it working :-D

Yeah, I already know it's not there. So, this will be a b*tch.

I went through the process again of trying to set up the wireless connection. Right-clicked on the Internet connection icon in the system tray, went to add a connection. Went to: Configure Network-->Wireless-->Select network interface-->:Use a Windows driver (with ndiswrapper)-->Look for driver-->Had to cancel at this point. When I did, I got:
Some components (Windows driver) are required but aren't available (I didn't have it) for ndiswrapper hardware. The required files can also be installed from this url: http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/medi ... x.php/List
Note that only drivers up to Windows XP are supported.

Try it. Go ahead, try it. If you do, it redirects to https://sourceforge.net/projects/ndiswrapper/, to download ndiswrapper itself, not to a driver? So, from there, I hover over the Wiki tab, and go to the second Wiki link, which goes to https://sourceforge.net/p/ndiswrapper/n ... Main_Page/
So, what I did was from there, I clicked on "List of companies"
I got:
Error 403
Create access required

As I did every other link on that page.

Grrrrrrrrr :f

I'm finding a lot of threads like this.

I'm probably up shit creek. Neither distro appears to have the 4.0 kernel (on the live cd/dvd) - and even then, it appears to be iffy with it.
The problem is, I'd have to install, then update, see if they update to the 4.0 kernel, but I can't do this without a working connection.
I may have to go hard-wired to get the updates, then just hope and pray.

Or simply try Manjaro +1

Code: Select all

uname -r
4.1.6-1-MANJARO

If it is a kernel problem that would take care of it...

Aye, just hadn't got 'round to checking that - will do, and will update this post when done.

Update: Yup, I'm screwed insofar as these two go:

Code: Select all

[manjaro@manjaro ~]$ uname -r
3.18.18-1-MANJARO
[manjaro@manjaro ~]$

Code: Select all

[live@localhost ~]$ uname -r
3.19.8-desktop-3.mga5
[live@localhost ~]$

I'll try openSUSE, the new one, and see if it will pick it up, but I've been reading that even on 4.0^ it's flakey and tricky.
I see that Arch is on 4.1.6-1, but I don't know if one gets there from an update from the cd, or what.

Man, this sux. I am so so tired of the putrified bullshit that is Windows.
