No desktop icons, KDE?

Linux Mint 12. It seems that I'm missing something in getting the computer, home, network, etc. icons to show on the desktop. I followed this old tutorial on how to do it, but had to translate some of the commands to click on for the version of KDE I'm on - 4.7.4 - because things weren't exactly as they are in that tutorial.

Got that sorted, got things down, got switched to folder view, evidenced in this screenshot:

However, I clearly have no desktop icons :( :

Any clue what's wrong?

Thanks.

I will leave this to the Gurus since I have foreign text.
I have the desktop view with a network plasma thing. I just right click on the desktop and add it.

OK, I'll check out the right-click menu more thoroughly when I get home. Hopefully, something will be there that I haven't seen to bring more light to this, although I've already checked it out. Thanks.

Edit: Wait. viking, is that a KDE stock background, or one of your own? I noticed that when I switched to that photo you see on the desktop above... that's when the icons didn't want to be visible, no matter what I did. I don't understand how that could make that difference, though.
