Even though not everyone will want to hear it...

I have a Linux box that I setup a couple of weeks ago, and I immediately did all of the updates it told me to. It seemed fair that there might be updates since the installation media was published, and also seemed fair that perhaps there were enough updates to warrant a reboot, so I did. Here we are just a couple short weeks later and I find myself with more updates - and another forced reboot.

Just sayin' :-)

Forced reboot? It is common for many distros to have updates (I think Arch have some every day on my boxes). I don't have to reboot though.
When there is a kernel update you often need to reboot to make the new kernel boot, but even that is not necessary.
Having to reboot is more of an Windows thing, but not unheard of in the Linux world either.

The OS that serves your purpose best is the best OS; that can be Windows - but often it is not - and people are not aware of the alternatives.

One major difference that everybody will immediately notice as a difference is when you try to copy your entire pictures folder to another folder;
That will take ages in Windows and be really fast in Linux.

It was certainly not an unprompted reboot, but the prompt didn't say which update(s) required it... just that it was needed for at least one of them. This is on Xubuntu 12 (the old LTS release) with the default applications plus SeaMonkey (manually downloaded since it is not in the repositories). Looking at the apt logs there was a kernel update listed which is a likely reason for the reboot. I don't really mind the reboot (it is a VM I shut down at night anyways) but when the reboot notice came up I thought of this thread right away. :-)
