Sound gone in Mageia 4

Postby viking60 » 13 Dec 2014, 13:06

I have this lady in Germany that has lost her sound.
The installation is mageia 4 and here is the audio system:

Code: Select all

[christa@localhost ~]$ inxi -A
Audio:     Card-1: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] FCH Azalia Controller driver: snd_hda_intel
           Card-2: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Device 9840 driver: snd_hda_intel
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture ver: k3.14.24-desktop-1.mga4

The sound seems muted alsamixer looks ok.

Need some help to get her sound back - :S Jim

I tweaked some settings as described here.
For good mesure I went to an older kernel and unmuted everything and there everything worked.

I then loaded the default kernel and it worked there too.

So it worked for me

Curious, did you do the full gammat of that on the Manjaro page, or just parts of it? If parts, which ones? I had similar happen in Mageia 3 XFCE.

Have constructed and reconstructed many an asound.conf file since pulseaudio's inception (mostly, but not solely, in Arch). It's a good file always to be aware of, whether it's present or not. /etc/pulse/default.pa is a very good idea to know and become familiar with.

In this particular case there were keys on the keyboard that did actually work.
Those keys are loudspeakers that mute and increase or decrease sound.
She must have touched the mute key...and it worked perfectly, but that was pretty impossibly for me to detect without being there.

What I should have done was to check the specs of that laptop.

The XFCE bar did have a symbol that indicated that sound was muted (that speaker with a red line across it).
That one did not work correctly and continued to indicate muted sound after it was unmuted with the (working) keys.
I had to remove it to avoid confusion.

After a trip to Germany I was able to fix that.

She only needed to made aware of the keys and uses them instead, to regulate the volume.

Once again, the simplest solution, and most obvious reigns. The one I never look for lol.
