Well, it's about time one were officially started.

Just installed this thing last week, via upgrade from F13. I'm not overly impressed, and may have to tear it out like I did F13 a while back (reinstalled it after to go up to F14, long story) due to its sucky implementation of pulseaudio, and I'd also like to know something. How the HELL in any distro, can they have just one week after installation, 1.1 GIGABYTES of updates?????!!!!!!!!!



I'd also like to know if they did anything real to it for F14? The art work's deplorable, IMHO. F13, take me away. Or not.

I will say one thing for it though - and I can't even do this in Arch: I have over forty (40!) tabs open in Firefox in Fedora happily working away, and it's not crashing. If it weren't for the animation glitch, I'd have it made.

Now, where was that Facebook tab? hhmmm...

I noticed in the upgrade, this thing removed xinitrc from /home in the upgrade:

Is there a way to force that, or do I have to build that file manually? How does that work? I need to get numlockx going on desktop load.

I have not tested it that much yet but so far I like what I see. Regarding sound and audio I will just accept your statements cause I have no idea. But the plop plob sound after login works just fine in VB
I think the artwork is cool but that really does not matter anyway. I will try to make some sense after further testing...

After updates today, I am unable to get back into Fedora. I don't know where the problem lies. I tried some of my old tricks from F13, but nothing worked. Still says it can't find the module, and it doesn't load on boot, either for Nvidia.

Is anyone else seeing this with the new Nvidia driver, and any ideas on how to fix? It's stalling at "Starting atd" on boot for me. I've tried startx, but it says it can't find the module. I've used my old known working xorg.conf from F13, as well as just trying nvidia-xconfig.

Edit: I am able to get in on the previous kernel, with the new nvidia driver - built just fine on boot with it, and I'm in the desktop, so I'm imagining it's something to do with the new kernel?

Okay, I guess no one knows or cares. No matter. I think I'm going to tear the damn thing out anyway again (pulseaudio implementation is pissing me off again, along with this).

In case it might give some hint before I do however, when I try "startx", I get this for the final blow so to speak:

First off, the FRIKKING MODULE ISN'T nvidia.ko, FEDORA RPM FUSION PEOPLE, SO STOP IT. IT'S nvidia_drv.so!!!

Oh, and Boss, I didn't say pulseaudio isn't working in Fedora 14. I said their implementation of it sucks. Which it does. One of these days I'll show screenshots of what I mean, if I keep it long enough to.

While I can appreciate that you're making a modicum of effort this time around to keep KDE and the kernel updated to the latest, and that you do detect my front USB ports, and that you don't give me a lame error on boot about my sound card like Arch does even though lm_sensors is installed, please stop crashing Fedora all over the place in your zeal to play rather than make a solid distro, so I don't have to keep installing and updating these damn HUGE debuginfo packages, which take forever to install and update. A debuginfo package that takes over 20 minutes to download during updates (qt-debuginfo) on your slow 220-225kbps server (mirrors.xmission.com) is ridiculous, and they take up a LOT of root space once installed. Stop it.

I don't understand how the statement can be made after some days of testing but nevertheless...

I wonder why it is that it seems their oddly-numbered releases are the stable ones? I still to this day, after updates amundo, can't get into F14 with anything but the nouveau driver. nv doesn't work, either!

I'm wondering, how necessary is it? I mean, that surely couldn't have anything to do with the nvidia driver not working, could it? I'm thinking more on a version mismatch being the problem (which it is a LOT - I've had it before. It takes rpmfusion FOREVER to update things!)

And ooooooohhh lookie at that screenie, too! Fedora 14 dkms being an F12 version! Now ain't that nice... <sarcasm>

I should try installing dkms before I tear the guts out of this thing first though. First to see if it can be installed at all, and second to see if anything at all is helped by it (doubtful).

If you have the appropriate akmod and kernel devel packages installed, the driver module should be rebuilt automatically on boot (when a new kernel is installed). This is useful if there's a delay in rpmfusion providing the kmod update. So far as I'm aware only virtualbox uses dkms.

Yeah, that's how I install it Jim, is with just "yum install akmod-nvidia" - I do it in init 3 so it's not running when it's installed.

Tried again last night - it's still not working. There's still a version mismatch (see code above). Had uninstalled nouveau, too - nv doesn't work now, nothing but nouveau does.

In Fedora, since I upgraded from F13>F14, my / (root) partition has become stuffed up. I don't remember specifically *how* I upgraded, whether I used the rpm method or preupgrade, but I'm thinking vaguely that it was preupgrade. I've run yum clean all, and that didn't do much of anything at all.

The problem is, /var/cache itself isn't stuffed up. There's a bare few rpms in /var/cache/yum/i386/14, but that's it, not enough to make a dent at all. before the upgrade, I had somewhere around 13 Gbs of 30 Gbs in / (root). After the upgrade, I have had ever since, 20 Gbs of 30 Gbs in / (root).

I don't remember where preupgrade puts its files if we use it, and I can't find it now in Fedora's upgrade instructions. Would anyone know?

Edit: Never mind, I do believe I have found it. It seems the debug packages are huge. I've just uninstalled the biggest one, qt-debuginfo, and got a gig back.


And, I am now in a much better place in / (root) after uninstalling all debuginfo packages:

I still don't get how or why they got there in the first place. They're not needed unless one really does cop a bug in a program, then ABRT will download the necessary debug packages for you if they're needed.
