Microsoft wants you to kill one of the most used OS's in the world within 3 days. That is when they will stop supporting it. So basically they want you to replace the XP OS with something else.
As I have said before here are some recommendations:
    Manjaro
    Mint
    Mageia
    Ubuntu
Ubuntu Desktop Enterprise (Service and customer rights)
Centos (Same as the below without the branding and the service)
RedHat Enterprise Linux desktop (Gives you the right to yell and complain at the supplier and if he is unable to dance to your tune; eventually a refund after a successful reclamation - business as usual)
    OpenSuse
Suse (same as the above with service and responsibility)

If you really are depending on Windows for that special program (Typically book keeping or Cad) then you can put Windows in a virtual machine under Linux - and run all the windows programs you like.
This is a great advantage from a security point of view too since no virus will be able to stop that computer - only the VW where Windows is; and those viruses can be removed from the host.

So here i the deal:
Switch to Linux! That is a sure way to make Microsoft support Windows XP for many years to come. Well because they can count money and they cannot afford to loose 30% of the OS market.

The problem with that is of course that you will never want to switch back to Windows once you have switched to Linux....

If you decide to go for Windows 7 (nobody wants Windows 8) you should go for the Libre Office package because it is compatible with all Windows and Linux versions. MS Office in the latest version - is not! It only works with Windows 7 and 8.
Here is a comparison
Basically Writer is better than Word. Excel and Calc are almost identical but if you use a lot of macros they may not be directly compatible.
