Mono the Microsoft Linux trap

Where is the ECMA version?

Some time ago Novell promised to divide mono with one open and free to use version, and the other one. Apparently jumping with excitement and joy. And then it got quiet....
The .NET specifications, 334 and 335, were submitted to ECMA and that other litle detail would make mono open without risk of being sued by Microsoft.
Peter Galli from Microsoft promised to make the code free.
Last week Novell's vice president Miguell de Icaza announced yet another mono version, but no ECMA version. This would be the only version that would be risk free to use. Miguell de Icaza made the promise too, and now he has been quiet about it for over a year.
Does he want everybody to forget it?
Was the real plan to get everybody to program in mono for Linux an then sue the crap out of it, all along? After people started to depend on the mono programs?
This stuff is still dangerous and until this is clear, it makes good sense to stay away from mono.

That's the first thing I uninstall after a distro installation, is mono, and everything that comes with it - there are too many alternatives now.

Mono in Castellano means Monkey (or single if is used as a name).

So get the Monkey off your back +1

I guess it is fine as long as you keep it out of Linux. We don't want to get sued by Microsoft. But thats life - if it gets you through then it is OK I guess. Just do not expect the FOSS world to embrace it.

b1o if it's any consolation, I do know of others who need it as well, who don't want to run Windows. I accept that, and can see it, I just don't use it myself - I figure that if I'm going to use Microsoft technology, I might as well run Windows in vbox or something... is that an option for you?

Well i want to work in linux, and play games in windows.
My laptop doesn't have windows for these reasons, i can run it in vbox, but i might aswell just make a partition and do a dualboot

Well I agree with you there: Serious work in Linux and playing in Windows. Sad that Microsoft has this war with Linux. All that stupid FUD makes it impossible to explore all the interesting interopt possibilities. Mono would have been great for that but as it is QT will probably be the FOSS programmers option.
