Ubuntu is droping Mono

Postby viking60 » 15 Jun 2010, 15:54

Ubuntu has decided to drop mono.
Ubuntu dropping Mono
This is now a clear trend in the Linux world since Fedora and Mandriva have dropped most, or all of it.
Mandriva dropping Mono

It is not neccessary to have the entire mono system on the box just for Tomboy, replacing it with gnote is enough and mono can be removed.
As I understand it the PC will become faster and less burdened too. Developers can still install Mono as much as they like. But it is not necessary to distribute it with the standard distro.

Building up dependencies towards it, is risky and unwanted by most people that want to see Linux prevail.

Funny, I had a feeling that was on the way. AnshulJain begged to differ with me. I just wasn't sure when it would happen. And yeah, get rid of mono, and the system's a LOT faster...

Well you were right as usual.
This is a clear trend and everybody sees the danger of building up dependencies to it. Well everybody, except Novell that is, but do they even count?
They are depending on Microsoft to make money on Linux. That part of their business will soon be gone. I think Mandriva will be around longer than Suse.
Embrace,Extend, Extinguish, the three big E's, have been working well for Microsoft so far.

Hell, even SuSE can be run w/o mono. LOL.

Sure it can but they have an interest in promoting mono and therefore an interest in promoting Microsoft.
Microsoft will recommend Suse to every Linux user and when they all are using it, it is time for the Extinguishing. In the High Power Computing (HPC) segment no one wants pure windows, so they need a partner.
Novell is helping them with this - which is plain stupid, since Microsofts goal is to extinguish Linux.
"What we agreed, which is true, is we'll continue to try to grow Windows share at the expense of Linux. That's kind of our job. But to the degree that people are going to deploy Linux, we want Suse Linux to have the highest percent share of that, because only a customer who has Suse Linux actually has paid properly for the use of intellectual property from Microsoft.

Steve Ballmer CEO Microsoft

At the moment less than 1% prefer pure Microsoft in this segment.
I have every reason to believe Ballmer when he wants Linux gone. So this must mean that Novel is not that keen on keeping Suse.

We have to remember that Novell have other areas of business too.
