The age is of some importance since there are some "here today - gone tomorrow" distros like
Fuduntu. Great distro but nevertheless gone..It matters if you want a system that just works year in and year out.
So staying around is good for that

I use Arch 12 years old and Manjaro (still a baby but a very good "Arch made easy" distro). I am confident that Arch will stay around.
Fedora Centos OpenSUSE and Ubuntu are not going to go away either.
It is something to consider when recommending a distro.
