Linux Foundation is coordinating Microsoft and Google

ImageLinux systems are the fastest growing systems in the world. They are open source and often so brilliant that the big giants like Microsoft, Google, Facebook, VMware, IBM, Cisco, Dell and Intel ++ use it and rely on it.

The Heartbleed vulnerability gave them all a scare. So they decided to fund core Open source projects. They formed the Core Infrastructure Initiative and will make sure that core projects like OpenSSL are fully funded in the future.

It can be argued that Heartbleed represents the worst hour in the history of open source but OpenSSL is so widespread that none of the proprietary systems are an alternative really.

Even Microsoft goes along with that and will put money on the table to ensure the security.
CII is a multi-million dollar project.
The money will be administered by the Linux Foundation and a steering group with people from the backers of the project.

Future projects to fund have not been identified yet - but DNS and Bind might make good candidates.

Pretty much every tech company that counts is on board with this project - there is a "loud" exception though: Apple!

These all deserve a hand for stepping up - and making the internet more secure :B

That is bad news.... Integration is another way to control some. Amazon has spyware in Ubuntu, Kindle is another Linux with Spyware. Where the money comes from for the Foundation? Follow the money and you will find the people. 99% of all these none profits are funded from the "bad guys".

Well they all need the internet so they all have a common interest in making it secure - good or bad.

Crappy DRM etc will not be funded here.
