Ubuntu is not for the elite

ImageMark Shuttleworth claims that Ubuntu is not for the elite but for the mainstream users. He thinks it is stupid to maintain the position that Linux should be exclusive and difficult. And the way Ubuntu is presented it is clear that they address the mainstream user.

Shuttleworth has zero interest in the crowd who wants to be different,

Many contributors have left Ubuntu on the account of the Unity desktop - which Shuttleworth defends rigorously. He ask them to move on without pissing in the well behind them.
And he claims that only Ubuntu will be able to compete on the desktop with Android Apple and Microsoft.

He might be right there.

Personally I am one of those who has moved on. And i think Unity is a disaster - It is to difficult for me.
Also the commands are rather complicated.
If I want to upgrade Arch I simply do

Code: Select all

pacman -Syu
in Ubuntu I need two commands:

Code: Select all

apt-get dist-upgrade

It is even more complicated if you want to re-install a package without dependency trouble.
In Arch this is all you need:

Code: Select all

pacman -S

In Ubuntu:

Code: Select all

apt-get install --reinstall

Remember: Arch is considered to be the elitist distro and Ubuntu the mainstream :confused

Having said that I do buy the vision of addressing the mainstream users, and I think the Ubuntu guys do it well. So I will not poison their well - and wish them the best of luck.
Ubuntu is Linux too.

Yeah, I keep telling people don't even load the stupid gui installer. It's much quicker to learn how to, and to do, updates from CLI.

I've come to where I really do not like the Mandriva or Mageia control centers; they are slower than molasses, comparatively.

In Mageia:

Code: Select all

urpmi --auto-update

I've run updates so many times like that, that now all I have to do is arrow up in console to it and hit enter.

Well you are one of those Shuttleworth does not care about. He wants the mainstream users and they ned a good GUI to pick and chose their software.
I thinkt the Mandriva MCC is the best here - way better than SUSE, but Ubuntu is doing this well too.

It looks like ROSA and OpenMandriva are sacrificeing the MCC so these distros will not be that mainstream anymore, That is good news for Ubuntu.....
